Little Gallery – Emotional Flight // María Rún
Emotional butterfly, I mirror myself in your wings. Emotional butterfly, he shatters into pastel-coloured memories of youth. I cut myself and get scratched…
Step into the world of ‘Warmth of the Cold’, Jenný's graduation project from the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague, Netherlands. The photography exhibition is inspired by the newly published photography book ‘Warmth of the cold’ and is a sincere journey through a cold landscape, exploring the warmth that is created by the sea in winter.
The sea has an allure, but at the same time it can be terrifying. The emphasis is on how vast the forces of nature are compared to the body's cells. These forces can bring people together and create a sense of community. The pages of the photography book feature images from the ‘Spaarnestad Photo Collection,’ as a testament to the history of gathering in the cold, but just in swimming costumes.
People gather like a shield on the seashore, forming a protective circle. Lost in the currents of the moment, they enter a flow where time and danger vanish. In this powerful unit, bodies and the sea become one. The challenge is not to conquer the waves, but to conquer the turmoil within. Fear diminishes when you are in the same shoes, or in the same open-water swimming shoes.
Jenný Mikaelsdóttir (1997) is a photographer from Iceland. She recently graduated with a BA in Photography from the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague, where she is based. She works with themes relating to the psyche and human behaviour. Her work is often a search for balance within the contrasts of her surroundings. Nature provides inspiration. By embracing intuition and playfulness in her projects, she creates a lyrical tension between the photograph and other elements such as text, collages and archives.
‘The photography book ’Warmth of the cold' was printed in a limited edition and will be on sale at the exhibition, along with photographs.
The exhibition opening is on 22nd February from 18:00-20:00 and everyone is welcome!

Step into the world of ‘Warmth of the cold’, a photo exhibition inspired by the newly published photo book of the same title. Created as part of Jenný's graduation work from the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague, Netherlands. The work is a sincere journey through a cold landscape where she investigates the warmth that arises beside the sea during winter.
The sea has a magnetic allure, yet at the same time it carries a touch of threat. The focus is on how great the natural forces are against the body's cells. These forces are not just powerful; they can unite us, creating a strong sense of community. Within the pages of the photo book are images from the ‘Spaarnestad Photo Collection,’ illustrating the story that there is nothing new about coming together in the cold, wearing only swimwear.
Individuals gather like a shield on the seashore, forming a protective circle. Lost in the currents of the moment, they enter a flow where time and danger dissolve. In this powerful unity, their bodies of water become one with the sea. The question is not to overcome the stormy seas but to conquer the inner storm. Fear diminishes as more people follow the same path or wear the same sea swimming shoes.

Her work explores themes related to the human psyche and behaviour, often striving to find harmony within contrasting environments. Nature serves as a source of inspiration for her.
