In my view: Shadow Theatre – a multilingual storytelling workshop
On Sunday 11 October from 1 pm to 3 pm, Hafnarborg and GETA are hosting a multilingual storytelling workshop where participants will create characters and tell…
Sunday, 28th April at 8 p.m. Concert at Hafnarborg Mathias Halvorsen's, pianist, and Gunnar Gunnsteinsson, composer. Works by Gunnar from the work series will be performed. Caretaker's Statement of Policy, along with works by Richard Wagner and Johann Sebastian Bach re-imagined by Mathias Halvorsen. The concert is part of Hafnarborg's contemporary music series, Hljóðönum.
The title of the concert, „I Believe in a Better World“, is taken from a work by the composer Gunnar Gunnsteinsson., The caretaker's statement of policy (e.g. A Janitor's Manifesto) which Gunnar will perform at the concert. Gunnar's series of works is a collection of narratives from a fictional world of a caretaker, which creatively reflects our contemporary era in the early stages of the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
The pianist Mathias Halvorsen reveals contemporary attitudes towards art and directs attention to the significance of history in the present day, with a retrospective glance into history where he reshapes sounds- and the conceptual world of well-known works from music history by the composers Bach (1685-1750) and Wagner (1813-1883). Interestingly, this will be the first time that music from the 18th and 19th centuries will be heard at a Hljóðana concert.
Tickets are on sale at Hafnarborg: the general admission price is 2,500 króna, and the price for senior citizens and students is 1,500 króna.
Soundtrack, Hafnarborg's contemporary music concert series, is particularly dedicated to 20th and 21st-century music, where the unique imagination and artistic struggle of composers lead audiences into previously uncharted territory. The concert series has been part of the Hafnarborg programme since 2013. The concerts are supported by the Music Fund.
Gunnar Gunnsteinsson, a composer, was born in Reykjavík in 1989 and studied composition in Amsterdam from 2011-2015. Recently, Gunnar's work has centred on the integration of music and the spoken word. Through narrative, one can find a certain freedom to utilise musical influences from different sources to create a kind of whole. Gunnar's most recent release is the album A Janitor's Manifesto which was released by the Futura Resistenza label in Brussels in 2023. The work was well received, among other places in the music magazine The Wire Magazine. The work uses spoken word and character study, but is centred on Gunnar's shadow self, „The Janitor“. As well as releasing his own material, Gunnar composes music for films and plays.
Mathias Halvorsen, pianist, is based in Reykjavík with his family but regularly performs in concerts across Europe, either as a soloist or in chamber music, and performs everything from his own music to innovative and creative interpretations of the standard repertoire. Among these is Mathias's recording of a work by Bach, The Well-Tempered Clavier (BWV 846–893), which was released by the Backlash Music label in 2018 under the title The Well-Prepared Piano, Vol. 1. The year 2020 was then followed by the publication On Goldberg Variations, which was created in collaboration with Jan Martin Gismervik, shedding new light on Bach's Goldberg Variations. The release is finally expected in 2024. On Palestrina which is published by the same publisher.
