New steam bath opened at the South Bay Pool
A brand-new steam room has been opened at the South Bay Pool. The pool has never been better than it is now, following the works that have been carried out there. In recent terms, a snake pool and cold plunge pools have also been added. It's best seen in person.

A brand-new steam bath now graces the South Bay Pool. The steam bath was opened last weekend. The swimming pool has become even more family-friendly, as in recent months a new paddling pool and a water-spraying snake have been added to delight the youngest children.
„Part of going swimming is enjoying yourself; these are health spas,“ says Aðalsteinn Hrafnkelsson, who has been the manager of Hafnarfjörður's swimming pools since 2011. „The renovated South Bay Pool is the biggest project we have undertaken at the swimming pools in Hafnarfjörður for a very long time.“ He is extremely pleased with the result. Next on the agenda is an upgrade to the changing rooms.
Three swimming pools in Hafnarfjörður
There are three swimming pools in Hafnarfjörður: the Suðurbær Pool, Ásvallalaug and the Sundhöll Hafnarfjarðar. They are different and have their own culture. „The Suðurbær Pool is an outdoor swimming pool with hot tubs. The Sundhöll is an indoor pool with outdoor tubs. It's a quiet place, the atmosphere is relaxed and it's closed at weekends. Ásvallalaug, on the other hand, is a great adventure for families with children, an indoor pool with both outdoor and indoor pools. We like each pool to have its own character and we hold on to that,“ he says.
The South Pool is one of Hafnarfjörður's gems. It was built in 1988. „Back then, there was no such thing as a lifeguard who was constantly watching over the pool.“ A space had been created for one afterwards, but with the current works, this has been rectified and the steam bath has been moved to a new location.
The cold pots are here to stay
Swimming pools across the country have been changing in recent years, particularly with the addition of cold plunge pools. Now they have become a part of the swimming pools, and that is also the case at the Suðurbær Pool. Two new cold plunge pools stand alongside the hot ones. Aðalsteinn says that saunas and steam baths are now also becoming even more popular. „We have answered that call,“ he says.
The South Bay Pool has a 12.5 x 25 metre outdoor swimming pool. Indoors, there is also a purpose-built teaching pool, which is also a good children's pool. A popular footpath runs through the pool's grounds. In the basement of the South Town Hall Pool, there is a Gym Heilsa health and fitness centre with facilities. The swimming pool offers regular school swimming lessons, SH swimming training, baby swimming sessions, water aerobics and yoga classes. A massage therapist also works on the premises.
