Thank you for a fantastic national day!

The town was in full bloom on its 80th National Day!

The atmosphere and festive spirit on our Icelandic national day were in full swing in Hafnarfjörður this year. Joy reigned, and we Hafnarfjörður residents enjoyed the day.

„Today we celebrate the 80th anniversary of the republic and remember those who laid the foundations for the independence and freedom of the Icelandic nation, something that is by no means taken for granted,“ said Mayor Rósa Guðbjartsdóttir on the stage at Thorsplan.

„We are grateful for the struggle of the pioneers and for the quality of life and prosperity that their decisions have brought to us Icelanders. It took perseverance and great fighting spirit to achieve this goal, and it was a real stroke of luck for us.“

A packed and traditional programme

The programme was packed with a national flavour. A parade from Flensborgarskóli, cupcakes to mark the 80th anniversary of the republic, a traditional costume photoshoot at Hafnarborg and the Viking festival in Víðistaðatún gave the day its colour. Then, the 'Fjallkonan' was skated and dressed in a kirtle at the library, and the audience was educated about the Icelandic costume.

The children, as usual, were the main attraction. They had their faces painted, stopped off all over town and bounced in bouncy castles, as the celebrations were taking place everywhere; for example, at Thorsplan, Hellisgerði, Sólvangur and Hörðuvellir.

Flourishing joy in Hafnarfjörður

„Hafnarfjörður is truly flourishing today,“ said the mayor, thanking the staff who worked so hard to make the town look its best on this national day. „Happy National Day, dear residents of Hafnarfjörður and guests, congratulations on the day and welcome here to Thorsplan in the Heart of Hafnarfjörður.“
