On 6th August, Hrönn Bergþórsdóttir, the outgoing headteacher of Víðistaðaskóli, welcomed Dagnýju Kristinsdóttur, the school's newly appointed headteacher, handed her the keys to the school and wished her well in her new role.

Retiring after a 36-year career in education in Hafnarfjörður.

On 6th August, Hrönn Bergþórsdóttir, the outgoing headteacher of Víðistaðaskóli, welcomed Dagnýju Kristinsdóttur, the school's newly appointed headteacher, handed her the keys to the school and wished her well in her new role.

Hrönn, who was headteacher of Víðistaðaskóli for nearly 11 years, says, „I am retiring after a 36-year career in education in Hafnarfjörður and will be starting to draw my pension, thus ending my career.“ We thank Hronn for her excellent work here in our school town and wish her all the very best in this new and exciting chapter ahead.

Dagný Kristinsdóttir is the head teacher of Víðistaðaskóli.

There were seven applicants for the position of head teacher of Víðistaðaskóli, which was advertised on 6 June after Hrönn Bergþórsdóttir resigned from her post after 11 years as head teacher. On 17 July, a notice was published on the Hafnarfjörður municipality's website that Dagný Kristinsdóttir had been appointed headteacher, as the application deadline had passed on 21 June.

Extensive experience in teaching and learning

Dagný completed a B.Ed in primary education from the Teachers' College of Iceland in 2006 and modules towards a BA in Icelandic in 2014. Dagný then completed a Master's degree in leadership and management from the University of Bifröst in 2018. She completed a diploma in public administration at the University of Iceland in 2022. Dagný has worked as a primary school teacher for many years and has also been a head of department in a primary school. From 2019-2020, she worked as the Director of Teaching and Service at the University of Bifröst.

Vídistaðaskóli is a team-teaching school with a variety of teaching methods. The school has 2 classes in the lower school, 3 classes in the middle school and 3–4 classes in the upper school. At the start of the 2023–24 school year, there were around 520 pupils in the school.

The guiding principles of Víðistaðaskóli are: Responsibility – Respect – Friendship, and the school's work is carried out in their spirit. At Víðistaðaskóli, the emphasis is on preparing pupils for the future in a democratic manner. The school operates in the spirit of democracy, holding special assemblies where various issues are discussed; this work is also linked to the Convention on the Rights of the Child.
