A piece of each is the title of Jóhanna's exhibition, and is defined by its theme, which is a play on the forms of the old rowing boats, along with the incomparable Icelandic mountain scenery and nature.

She calls the sculptures Fjallabáta, as they are fragments of both. This is Jóhanna's first solo exhibition, in which she juxtaposes rough and rugged works against soft and lyrical ones, presenting contrasts that can be seen widely in nature.

The works are made, on the one hand, from high-fired stoneware coloured with various oxides and glazes, and on the other, from porcelain which is sometimes coloured. To achieve the desired texture, she also uses ash and pumice from the 1973 eruption in Westman Islands, and ash from the 2010 eruption of Eyjafjallajökull.

Jóhanna graduated from the Icelandic School of Occupational Therapy in 1987 and the Ceramics Department of the Iceland Academy of the Arts in 2000. She has worked in occupational therapy throughout her career and has been practising art alongside it in recent years. Over time, art has taken up more space in her life, and wall-mounted clay sculptures have become her signature.

Jóhanna was born and raised in the Westman Islands. The influence of this close proximity to nature and the local way of life is clearly evident in the works now on display at the Little Gallery, which have been specially created for this exhibition.

The exhibition opening will be on Thursday, 19th September from 16:00 to 20:00, and all are welcome!

Elements of Two is the title of Jóhanna's exhibition, and it is inspired by her focus on playing with the forms of old rowing boats and the incomparable Icelandic mountain views and nature.

She calls her sculptures "Mountain Boats," as they are elements of both. This is Jóhanna's first solo exhibition, where she combines rough and coarse works with soft and poetic ones, bringing out the contrasts often found in nature.

The artworks are made from high-fired stoneware, tinted with various pigments and glazes, and from porcelain, which is sometimes tinted. To achieve the texture she seeks, she also uses ash and pumice from the volcanic eruption in Westman Islands in 1973 and ash from the Eyjafjallajökull eruption in 2010.

Jóhanna graduated from the ceramics department of the Iceland Academy of the Arts in 2000. Throughout her career, she has worked as a social pedagogue, while also practising visual arts alongside that profession in recent years. Over time, visual art has taken up more space in her life, with wall-mounted ceramic sculptures becoming her signature style.

Jóhanna was born and raised in the Westman Islands. The strong influence of her close proximity to nature and local industries is clearly reflected in the works currently on display at Litla Gallerý, which were specially created for this exhibition.

The exhibition opening will be on Thursday, 19th September, from 16:00 to 20:00 and everyone is welcome!
