In my view: Shadow Theatre – a multilingual storytelling workshop
On Sunday 11 October from 1 pm to 3 pm, Hafnarborg and GETA are hosting a multilingual storytelling workshop where participants will create characters and tell…
Saturday, 25th January at 4 p.m. will Peter Thomsen, an artist, will be welcoming visitors and discussing the exhibition. Settlement, which features works from the artist's ongoing series of the same title, but this is the first time Pétur has held an exhibition of the works under that title. Please note that the event, which is part of the programme for the 2025 Iceland Photo Festival, will be in Icelandic and English.
Settlement is a long-term photographic project in which Pétur explores human exploitation of the land and its impact on nature. The artist photographs mines, roads, lava fields, forests, streams and farmland in the cover of darkness, using flash to define his subjects. The photographs thus become a testament to humanity's environmental impact on nature, which over the past few centuries has been so extensive that many believe human activity has initiated a new geological era, the Anthropocene: an era characterised, among other things, by climate change and global warming.
Peter Thomsen (b. 1973) completed an MFA in photography from the École nationale supérieure de la photographie in Arles, France, in 2004. He previously studied French, art history and archaeology at the Université Paul Valéry in Montpellier and fine art photography at the École supérieure des métiers artistiques in the same city. Pétur has received various awards and accolades, but in 2004 he received, for example, the LVMH Group Prize, which was then being awarded for the 10th time to a young artist. He was then selected by the Musée de L'Élysée in Lausanne as one of 50 photographers likely to make their mark on the future history of photography for the project reGeneration: 50 Photographers of Tomorrow.
