„This is so much fun“ – A music course for children aged 5 to 18 months

The children enjoy themselves at the music school.

„This is absolutely wonderful,“ says María Gunnarsdóttir, a music teacher at Setbergsskóli in Hafnarfjörður, who is running a music course for young children starting on 25 January and running until 8 March. María has decades of experience teaching music to children.

„Although the course is for young children, it's so much done for the parents,“ says María. „We have musical instruments, little shakers, drums, bubbles. I sing with the children and recite rhymes that I find fun. The sessions always follow the same structure, because repetition is so important for children,“ says María.

„Little teddy bear Bjössi in a little ashtray wakes up and says good morning. When the time is up, I sit at the piano. Bjössi comes over and falls asleep when I sing. Am I in a dream palace?. Then the children know that the time is up.“

Older siblings welcome with

The course is for children aged 5-18 months, and older siblings are welcome for an additional fee. Sessions last 40 minutes.

„We do movement games, sing songs about the body and other fun nursery rhymes and chants. We use glitter bottles, scarves, all sorts of fun percussion instruments that stimulate musical development and, last but not least, fun music that both parents and the child will enjoy,“ says María, adding that the parents receive a songbook at the end of the course so they can sing the songs for their children at home.

The course now is the first of the year and there are places available. „Yes, there are places available, so you can jump in and take part.“

Lessons take place at the Hafnarfjörður Music School, Strandgata 51, in room 6. The course fee is 16,000 krónur for six sessions.
