Haukar's sports hall inaugurated

„At last, at last, these are the words that come to mind on this landmark day as we celebrate the imminent completion of one of the most magnificent sports facilities in Iceland,“ said Magnús Gunnarsson, chairman of Haukar, on Friday, as the club's new sports hall was inaugurated. It was a momentous day for the Haukar community. Around 1,000 people attended the opening ceremony. Joy was the order of the day.

Rósa Guðbjartsdóttir, chair of the town council, went even further and said: „Finally, finally, finally.“ The building was magnificent.

Magnús mentioned that the Hafnarfjörður town council had „shown boldness and foresight in building a magnificent sports facility which it is now entrusting to the football club Haukar for management and operation for years to come,“ said Magnús. The people of Hafnarfjörður have come together to build the sporting town of Hafnarfjörður. The entire facility is transformed by the football house at Ásvellir.

„The very best facilities in the country“

Arnór Bjarki Blomsterberg, the vicar of Ástjarnarkirkja, consecrated the building. „Congratulations on this magnificent football building and this unique facility that we have been given here today,“ he said.

„This house is not just a new football house but a symbol of countless opportunities and, hopefully, a symbol of an ambitious vision,“ he said.

„We stand in the best football position in the country, in the heart of one of the most populous and child-richest neighbourhoods in the country, in a neighbourhood where countless children dream of playing football, learning, growing and winning. What does that mean? It means that the possibilities are endless. It means that Haukar should aim for the top and become a powerhouse in Icelandic football,“ said Arnór before he dedicated the building with the words of God.

Skiki became a sports facility

In his speech, Magnús described how an agreement for Haukar to cede a plot of land to the town for housing development was the deciding factor. The funds were channelled into the construction of the building. 1.272 million was received for the plot, which eased the project's funding. Haukar's sports complex is now one of the best in the country. He thanked the town council and its staff, and especially former mayor Rósa, for her part in driving the project forward with her colleagues on the council.

In her speech, Rósa said that Haukar had shown great ambition by donating part of the plot of land to finance the sports hall. „That's when everything got underway,“ said Rósa. She said the work was not just about victories, but just as much about the social work.

„Being together. And that is precisely what Haukar are strong in. Haukar are so close-knit, and for that I want to thank everyone who has been involved here for a long time, and most recently over the past decades, Magnús Gunnarsson, who leads the way there. Everyone is welcome here, everyone is a friend. This house is wonderful.“ The people of Hafnarfjörður can enjoy it in one way or another.

„It has now reached the point where the facilities here at Ásvallur for sport and wellness are among the best in the country.“ People will want to live there because of the facilities. She looks forward to seeing the building bustling with life for a long time to come.

Proud of the sports town

Mayor Valdimar Víðisson then took the keys from xxx of ÍAV after his speech. ÍAV was proud of the work. He said a fantastic team had overseen the construction.

Valdimar congratulated Haukar and the residents. „Hafnarfjörður is truly a sporting town we can be proud of.“ The milestone was significant. The building would completely revolutionise the town's facilities.

Magnús thanked everyone who was involved in the construction of the house: „The future is bright.“
