Twice-weekly water aerobics at Ásvallalaug

„Plenty of room in the pool,“ says Kristinn Magnússon of Ásmegin Physiotherapy, who runs water aerobics for 67-year-old and older residents of Hafnarfjörður at Ásvallalaug twice a week. The sessions are on Mondays and Thursdays from 14:40 to 15:20. The session with Kristinn was a lot of fun before the weekend, and today the collaboration with the City of Hafnarfjörður was extended. The Mayor and Kristinn signed a continued cooperation agreement.

The exercise class is therefore still offered by the town. The aim is to promote exercise and health, whilst also creating a social space for people to meet and have a good time together. „Usually, around 30 or more people turn up,“ says Kristinn. „The group is close-knit and very welcoming to new members.“

More opportunities in water

But why train in water? „People can do lifts in the water that they wouldn't do on dry land. We can play around with balance and stability exercises. There are no injuries from falling in the water. We're therefore allowed to do things, and can do things that we can't do on dry land. The water catches us,“ explains Kristinn, adding that with the exercise, people maintain their abilities.

Recommends water aerobics

„We in physiotherapy refer people to water aerobics, as they are then in a maintenance programme. Maintenance is needed when you start to move less as you get older. That's the benefit of it,“ says Kristinn, who encourages people aged 67 and over to take part.

„Yes, you have nothing to lose and the company is good.“
