Sunday, 16 February at 3 p.m. We welcome you to a discussion about the exhibition. Péturs Thomsen, Settlement, on the occasion of the last day of the exhibition. Artist Jón B. K. Ransu will then have a conversation with Pétur about the exhibition and his approach to the subject. The works on display are part of Pétur's ongoing series of the same title, but this is the first time he has held an exhibition of works from the series under this title.

Settlement is a long-term photographic project in which Pétur explores human exploitation of the land and its impact on nature. The artist photographs mines, roads, lava fields, forests, streams and farmland in the cover of darkness, using flash to define his subjects. The photographs thus become a testament to humanity's environmental impact on nature, which over the past few centuries has been so extensive that many believe human activity has initiated a new geological era, the Anthropocene: an era characterised, among other things, by climate change and global warming.

Pétur Thomsen (b. 1973) graduated with an MFA in Photography from the École nationale supérieure de la photographie in Arles, France, in 2004. He previously studied French, art history and archaeology at the Université Paul Valéry in Montpellier, and fine art photography at the École supérieure des métiers artistiques in the same city. Pétur has received various awards and accolades; in 2004, for instance, he received the LVMH Prize, which was then being awarded to a young artist for the tenth time. He was then selected by the Musée de L'Élysée in Lausanne as one of 50 photographers likely to make their mark on the future history of photography for the project reGeneration: 50 Photographers of Tomorrow.
