Sunday, 27th April at 8 p.m. Concert at Hafnarborg Gunnhildur Einarsdóttir, harpist, and of Matthias Engel, percussionist, under the banner Ensemble Adapter. The programme is dedicated to the music of the German composer Walter Zimmermann, who has been a leading voice in German contemporary music since the 1970s, both as a composer and, not least, as a cultural liaison between German and American contemporary music. The concert is part of Hafnarborg's contemporary music series, Hljóðönum.

Walter Zimmermann's music could be described as distilled and free from any unnecessary embellishment. The music features simple and clear musical ideas, which are allowed to grow and flourish without interruption. Gunnhildur and Matthias have worked closely with Walter Zimmermann in recent semesters on the performance of his works and will, among other things, perform at the concert a recent work by Walter for harp and percussion, composed especially for them, as well as the solo harp piece Cloudy places (German). Cloud-region) since 1980.

Hljóðön, Hafnarborg's contemporary music concert series, is dedicated to the music of the 20th and 21st centuries, where the unique imagination and artistic struggle of composers lead audiences into previously uncharted territory. The concert series has been part of Hafnarborg's programme since 2013. The concert is supported by the Music Fund.


The chamber group Ensemble Adapter works both at home and in Berlin. Founding members Matthias Engler, percussionist, and Gunnhildur Einarsdóttir, harpist, lead the group's work, which focuses on collaboration and co-creation with a diverse group of artists from around the world. Ensemble Adapter takes a broad approach to musical creation, and the group's work is diverse, ranging from creating, curating, and producing, to running workshops and educational programmes, to performing contemporary music, whether on stage or through other digital media. Since the ensemble's foundation in 2004, it has premiered hundreds of works and performed at numerous festivals and concerts across Europe.

Gunnhildur Einarsdóttir, harpist, has worked throughout Europe with chamber groups and orchestras such as Klangforum Wien, Ensemble Recherche, Ensemble Modern, Ensemble Mosaik, CAPUT Ensemble and the Reykjavík Chamber Orchestra, as well as orchestras such as the Iceland Symphony Orchestra, the Konzerthausorchester Berlin, the Bayerisches Staatsorchester Munich and the Lautencompagnie Berlin. As a soloist, Gunnhildur has performed with the Iceland Symphony Orchestra, the Pärnu City Orchestra, Ensemble Modern and Ensemble Recherche. She has also given solo recitals widely, appearing, among other venues, in the Les signes de l'arc concert series in Paris and at the Nordic Heritage Museum in Seattle.

Matthias Engler, a percussionist, has worked with numerous chamber groups across Europe, notably Ensemble Modern and MusikFabrik. In this context, Matthias has worked with leading composers and conductors in the world of contemporary music, such as Pierre Boulez, Helmut Lachenmann, Mauricio Kagel and Steve Reich, among others. Matthias has also appeared at all the major European contemporary music festivals, such as the Darmstädter Ferienkurse für Neue Musik, MaerzMusik, Donaueschinger Musiktage and the World New Music Days.
