Songs and winners of the singing competition

Sara Karabin from Mosinn at Hraunvallar School and Karólína Bríet Arelakis from Setrið at Setbergs School won the Hafnarfjörður Singing Competition, which was held at Bæjarbíó on 5 March.

Thirteen from 7 youth clubs took part in the Singing Competition. This annual event is one of the biggest and best events of the youth clubs each year.

The contestants received professional guidance in a dress rehearsal from sound engineer Friðrik Helgason and performer and musician Rakel Björk Björnsdóttir. It takes a great deal of courage to perform in front of a full room of people. From the very first minute, it was abundantly clear that goosebumps were just around the corner.

The two acts that come out on top will be decided at the Samfés Song Contest, which takes place in the Laugardalshöll at the beginning of May. The competition will be broadcast live on RÚV.

The hosts for the evening were Hulda Karen Bergmann and Rebekkah Chelsea. They kept the atmosphere lively in the hall and guided the audience through a veritable musical feast.

The competitors were:
  • Andrea Laxdal (The Verge)
  • Anna Aðalsteinsdóttir and Arney Sif Zomers (Hraunið),
  • Hjörleifur Daði Oddson and Birna Lára Sigurðardóttir (Hraunið)
  • Karen Hrönn Guðjónsdóttir (Ásinn)
  • Karólína Bríet Arelakis (Setrið)
  • Sara Karabin (The Moss)
  • Eva Dís Heiðarsdóttir (Now)
  • Sara María Sigþórsdóttir (Setrið)
  • Sonia Laura Krasko (The Moss), Sólrún Eva Hannesdóttir (The Lighthouse)
  • Styrmir Snær Árnason (Ásinn)

No one envied the judging panel for having to choose between these talented young people. The judging panel consisted of Rebekka Sif Stefánsdóttir, songwriter, singer and singing teacher; Steingrímur Daði Kristjánsson, songwriter and singer; and Fjóla Sigrún Sigurðardóttir, Head of the Leisure Centre at Skarðshlíðarskóli.

And how were the scenes?

  • Sara sang „Ashes“ by Celine Dion and Karólína sang „From the Start“ by Laufey.
  • In second place were Hjörleifur Daði Oddson and Birna Lára Sigurðardóttir from Hrauni at Víðistaðaskóli with the song „Million Dreams“ from The Greatest Showman.
  • In third place was Sólrún Eva Hannesdóttir from Vitanum in Lækjarskóli with the song „This is the Life“ by Amy Macdonald.

We can certainly be proud of our fantastic young people who performed brilliantly on the big stage! We look forward to seeing more of them flourish in next year's Singing Competition.
