Grand concert for the 75th anniversary of the music school
„The concert is growing by the minute,“ says Eiríkur Stephensen, headmaster of the Hafnarfjörður Music School, which is celebrating its 75th anniversary with two major concerts on Saturday. Nearly 300 performers will take to the stage.
Thousands are studying at the music school
The 100-piece brass band of the Hafnarfjörður Music School performs the song Uprising by the English rock band Muse at their 75th anniversary concert on Saturday. Nearly 300 young people aged from 5 to 20 are performing at the concert. „The concert is growing with every minute,“ says Eiríkur Stephensen, the headmaster of the music school. „We're excited, yes, the excitement level is high. It's going to be great fun,“ says Eiríkur.
Diversity that delivers
Big band, Symphony Orchestra, Suzuki groups, string orchestras, rhythm ensemble, guitar ensemble, recorder ensemble, piano ensemble, accordion ensemble and school choir. Friday is spent setting up the stage. Intensive rehearsals take place all week. Tickets are available from Tix.is and inside the hall. Eiríkur says just under 600 children are studying at the school this winter. It has been like that for the last 20 years, and many thousands have studied musical instruments and taken lessons at the school since it was founded. „There are quite a few working professional musicians who have graduated from the school. Even the Prime Minister was a piano student here,“ says Eiríkur, who took over the school in 2018.
Highlights from the anniversary concert
„The idea was always to get as many students as possible involved. These are quite large-scale performances. Guitar and recorders together. A 100-piece brass band. Twelve playing the piano, six students playing on each of the two grand pianos,“ he describes. „Then we have a choir with an accordion and a string ensemble. A symphony orchestra and Suzuki groups. Then a jazz band.“ He continues.
Eyþór Ingi presents and sings
Singer Eyþór Ingi will be singing with both the big band and the brass band at the concerts, which are being held twice this Saturday: once at 1 pm and again at 3 pm. „It's going to be a magnificent moment and a fun experience for the students to play in such large bands. They're experiencing something completely new – different from the usual – and you can experience it with them,“ says Eiríkur, encouraging as many people as possible to come along and enjoy it with them.
Tickets at TIX.is and at the entrance.
Yes, a very happy birthday to you.
CAPTION: The rehearsal space is being put to good use these days, as is every square metre, as the orchestra is large. Over the next few days, the set-up will take place in the sports hall on Strandgata for the big concert.
