Woman – Working through burnout through creativity
Woman – Working through burnout through creativity // Unnur Gígja Ingimundardóttir The exhibition is the result of the process of coming to…
The human body is the most common subject in Guðrún's paintings. The expression of the human being through the human body, the flesh and facial expressions have always interested her. The subject, the human being, is depicted as they are at their core, without disguise or any attempt to hide their essence. Guðrún has experimented with various materials to achieve the right texture, and in the process of creating a painting, the subject dictates the journey and the outcome. Guðrún has sought to explore contrasts in brushwork, colours and in the subject matter itself. The motivation to paint is a need to express emotions, an interpretation of existence and experience, both material and subjective, and the painting serves as a language not necessarily understood through words. Guðrún approaches the subject matter with different brushstrokes, coarse or fine, and with light and shadow to achieve the atmosphere the subject calls for.
Guðrún Steingrímsdóttir completed her A-levels in the Art Programme at the Breiðholt Comprehensive School in 2009. In the spring of 2022, she completed a diploma from the Fine Art Department of the Reykjavík School of Visual Arts. Following this, she went to Italy on an Erasmus scholarship and in the autumn of 2022 completed a three-month workshop, 'Intensive course in drawing, painting and art history', at The Florence Academy of Art. She also took two courses at the Academia del Giglio in Florence that same winter. Guðrún held a group exhibition at Gallery Vest in 2015, a degree show at the Reykjavík School of Visual Arts in 2022, and a solo exhibition in the autumn of 2022 at Gallery Göng. In March 2024, she held a solo exhibition at Gallery Grásteinn.

The human body is the subject of Guðrún's paintings. A human expression through the body; flesh and countenance have always piqued her interest. The subject – human beings – is expressed at its core, without a mask or any attempt to conceal its essence. Guðrún has experimented with different materials in her pursuit of the right texture; in the process of creating a painting, the subject guides her direction and outcome. Guðrún seeks to examine contrasts in brushwork and colour, as well as within the subject matter itself. The impulse to paint is in itself a need for the expression of emotion, an interpretation of existence and experience; a material and a subjective need. The painting thus serves as a language which cannot necessarily be understood through words. Guðrún approaches the subject with varying brushstrokes, whether rough or fine, and uses light and shadow to capture the atmosphere that the subject calls for.
