Joint project of the youth councils: „Höfn in Hafnarfjörður“
From 20th to 23rd April, the youth council of Höfn in Hornafjörður is travelling to visit the youth council of Hafnarfjörður. This is a joint project between the two youth councils, entitled „Höfn in Hafnarfjörður“.
The aim is for the youth councils to gain a deeper understanding of the situation of marginalised groups in society and to find ways to ensure that the country's youth councils better reflect the diversity of the community. The collaboration then concludes with a visit. Hafnarfjörður Youth Council to the Harbour, and the young people aim to produce an educational video so that the knowledge they gain can be shared with other youth councils in the country.
Representatives of the youth councils have spent the past few terms working day and night to organise the visit and book speakers. For example, there will be talks from young refugees, LGBTQ+ people, and people who have become involved in the disability rights movement, as well as visits from a representative of UNICEF and the MP for Hafnarfjörður, Ágúst Bjarni Garðarsson. The lectures and workshops will be in Hamranum – the youth centre of Hafnarfjörður, located at 14 South Street.
This is the first time that a youth council in Iceland has undertaken a collaborative project of this kind, with the aim of strengthening the democratic participation of marginalised young people. The project is funded by the Erasmus+ programme of the European Union.
