Today, the Mayor of Reykjavík and the mayors of Mosfellsbær, Seltjarnarnes, Kópavogur, Garðabær and Hafnarfjörður signed a landmark agreement between the municipalities on a major initiative to renovate and develop the facilities of the capital region's ski areas at Bláfjöll and Skálafell.
The signing took place at the service centre in Bláfjöll just now at midday in a light sleet.
The agreement entails the renewal and installation of three chairlifts in Bláfjöll and the renewal of a chairlift in Skálafell in the coming years. Furthermore, snowmaking equipment will be installed in Bláfjöll.
Alongside these projects, work will continue on the development of the cross-country skiing area and on improving facilities for cross-country skiers.
The estimated cost of these works for the years 2019–2024 is approximately 3.6 billion króna.
These projects are the first of two phases in the overall development of the ski areas, based on a vision for their development and operation until the year 2030.
This agreement will break the stalemate that has existed in the development of the capital region's ski areas for some time, and it therefore marks a turning point in the development and operation of the capital region's ski areas.
