New passenger wheelchair for disabled people gives and brings joy

Recently, the dream of the staff and service users of Húsið in Hafnarfjörður came true when they acquired a passenger bicycle. The Húsið acquired the bikes through government recovery measures intended to promote social participation for people with mental health conditions and disabled people during the Covid pandemic. In discussions between staff and service users at Húsið, it was decided to use the grant for projects designed to increase freedom and give disabled people the opportunity to experience and live life to the full. 

The House in Hafnarfjörður's dream of a passenger ferry has become a reality

Recently, the dream of the staff and service users of Húsið in Hafnarfjörður came true when they acquired a passenger bicycle. The Húsið acquired the bikes through government recovery measures intended to promote social participation for people with mental health conditions and disabled people during the Covid pandemic. In discussions between staff and service users at Húsið, it was decided to use the grant for a project designed to increase freedom and give disabled people the opportunity to experience and live life to the full. There will be two bikes, but the first was delivered this week and it's safe to say the joy is immense and the experience is unique and different.

Everyone agrees that the cycling trips offer a great deal of freedom and a fantastic feeling.

The bicycles will be available for loan to homes and institutions that serve disabled people.

The passenger bike, which has already been delivered, is a Van Raam Chat bike, an electric bicycle that can carry 1-2 passengers and one rider. The bikes are intended for short-term loan to homes and institutions that serve people with mental and/or physical disabilities. There are currently 13 homes (residential units) for disabled people in Hafnarfjörður, housing 65 individuals in independent living arrangements with varying levels of support according to their skills and abilities. A second bicycle, a Veloplus designed for wheelchair users, is expected at Húsið in the near future. The bikes are both relatively simple and comfortable to use. The first week on the Van Raam Chat bike is promising, and the joy of those who have already tried it is pure and sincere. It is the unanimous opinion of everyone that the bike rides bring a great sense of freedom and a fantastic feeling.

IMG_4973One wheelchair has arrived, and many of those who have left are waiting for the wheelchair intended for them.

The house provides a variety of resources for disabled people aged 10-60.

The building in Hafnarfjörður is located at 14 Suðurgata and houses, among other things, a variety of leisure activities for disabled young people aged 10-25 and employment opportunities for individuals aged 20-60. Thus, Geitungarnir is an employment programme and creative work for 20-60 year-olds, Vinaskjól is a diverse leisure activity for 16-20 year-olds, and Kletturinn is a leisure activity for children and young people aged 10-16. The headquarters of Hjólinn will be in Húsið.
