Hafnarfjörður is recruiting a special educational needs adviser for nurseries within the City of Hafnarfjörður's Education and Leisure Services.

A nursery special educational needs adviser provides support and advice to parents, teachers and nursery staff for children who require special support. A special educational needs adviser works in close collaboration with staff from education and leisure services and public institutions related to the affairs of children with special needs. The adviser also provides guidance to children whose first language is Icelandic.

Key tasks:

  • Providing professional advice and support to parents, teachers and staff regarding children who are receiving specialist assistance or support.
  • Advises nursery school staff on pedagogical approaches and individual learning plans.
  • Participation in team meetings for children with special needs, advice to teachers and parents
  • Monitors and shares innovations regarding the affairs of children who require specialist assistance and support.
  • Participation in shaping training for nursery school staff in their field.

Educational and competency requirements:

  • Qualification as a nursery school teacher and further education in special education are required.
  • Experience in special education in a nursery school
  • Experience in guiding and/or working with behaviour intervention and structured teaching is an advantage.
  • Knowledge and experience in teaching Icelandic as a second language, as well as in multicultural teaching methods.

  • Good computer skills
  • Good command of Icelandic and the ability to express oneself both orally and in writing.

The application must include an overview of education and experience, along with a more detailed statement of the intended focus and interests for the position.

Hafnarfjörður has a population of around 28,000 and currently runs 15 nurseries, with a service contract for a further two. The Education and Leisure Services of Hafnarfjörður is a service organisation dedicated to education in the municipality, employing specialised staff who provide professional advice and services appropriate to each case.
