Targeted beautification delivers results
It does not escape the notice of anyone passing through Hafnarfjörður these days that the town is in full bloom. Colourful flowerbeds, green spaces and well-kept surroundings are a feature of the town and have attracted well-deserved attention. In recent weeks, numerous residents and visitors have contacted the City of Hafnarfjörður to express their delight with the town's appearance and to praise the staff for the beautiful and flourishing surroundings.
Behind this beautiful appearance lies the dedicated work of the staff of Hafnarfjörður municipality in collaboration with contractors. The municipal horticulture department undertakes a wide variety of tasks all year round, maintaining open spaces, parks and greenery throughout the town. Alongside this regular maintenance, three ambitious projects are currently underway, which share the common goal of making Hafnarfjörður even greener, more beautiful and more pleasant for residents and visitors.
The Facelift of the City Centre
A targeted renewal of the streetscape in the heart of Hafnarfjörður has been undertaken. Particular emphasis has been placed on beautifying the main approaches to the town centre, including along Reykjavíkurveg and Fjarðargata, as well as the roundabouts in the area. Work has also been carried out on the refurbishment of Strandgata, Thorsplan and the area around the Fjord, where colourful summer flowers and renewed street trees create a warmer and more beautiful townscape. New trees have replaced older ones, thereby strengthening the future green appearance of the city centre.
A comprehensive plan has been developed for the development of the town centre, which includes a variety of ideas for further development. The projects will be prioritised and implemented in phases, as the budget allows.
Greener Fields
At Völlunum, vegetation has long struggled due to challenging weather conditions and poor soil. To reverse this trend, a targeted plan was developed on how to improve growing conditions and enhance the vegetation in the area. Since this spring, the council's horticulture department has been working according to that plan, and positive signs of success are already beginning to appear. With continued development, the aim is to create greener and more flourishing neighbourhoods that will thrive even better in the years to come.
More vegetation in Ásland
Later this summer and into the autumn, extensive planting will take place in Ásland I, II and III. Hundreds of plants will be planted, which will enhance the green appearance of the neighbourhoods and make the outdoor areas even more attractive for residents of all ages. The aim is to create a diverse, beautiful and sustainable green environment for the town's residents to enjoy for years to come, contributing to an improved quality of life.
Shared pride
A beautiful town environment doesn't just happen by itself. It is the result of the professionalism, organised work and ambition of the staff at Hafnarfjörður Municipality, who work daily, in collaboration with contractors, to nurture the town's green spaces. This is also the result of the town's residents and businesses, who look after their town and contribute by taking good care of their own greenery and grounds. It is particularly gratifying when residents and visitors notice the changes and send in praise and comments about how flourishing and beautiful Hafnarfjörður has become. Such feedback is the best confirmation that targeted development is delivering results.
Hafnarfjörður is truly in bloom – and that's only the beginning.
