In January, musician Jón Ragnar Jónsson will visit all Year 8 pupils at Hafnarfjörður's primary schools. Jón will chat with the pupils in each class about healthy lifestyles, with a special focus on the use of smokeless tobacco and e-cigarettes. He shares entertaining stories from his life and sings a song about love and chewing tobacco.
The Cancer Society of Hafnarfjörður and the Municipality of Hafnarfjörður have been running this project since 2010, when a significant level of smokeless tobacco use was recorded. Since then, this fun educational programme has been running and has shown good results. In 2010, 12% of Year 10 pupils in the town's primary schools reported using smokeless tobacco once or more in the 30 days before the survey was conducted. By 2017, this figure was 4% among Year 10 pupils.
