The opening of new shops in Firði is drawing near, and the luxury flats there are already on sale. Valdimar Víðisson says the changing face of the heart of Hafnarfjörður is boosting the town centre.

Increased life is moving into the fjord.

The mayor was met with a splendid sight when he visited Fjörður recently to inspect the ongoing development. The opening of new shops is imminent, and the luxury flats, a total of 31, are already on sale. Valdimar Víðisson says the changing appearance of the heart of Hafnarfjörður strengthens the town centre.

„This is a big step for the town centre. An environment will be created here that connects old and new times, making the town centre an even bigger attraction for residents and visitors. Hafnarfjörður's town centre has always had a unique charm, but with this development, we are getting new life and an exciting mix of residential and commercial services that strengthens the entire town,“ says Valdimar.

The development of Fjarðar began almost three years ago with a groundbreaking ceremony, following many years of preparation. It will include:

  • 4,250 m² residential property
  • 1,100 m² hotel apartments, 18 in total
  • 1,600 m² retail premises
  • 550 m² multimedia centre of the library
  • 1200 m² car park
  • Total 8,700 m²

Guðmundur Bjarni Harðarson, managing director of Fjarðar, accompanied the mayor around the buildings on this day. „The development is going well,“ he says. The shopping centre is scheduled to open before Christmas. The flats have just come on the market and interest is high. “We've only had them on the market for about a fortnight and I can say that sales are off to a good start," he explains.

The Library in Fjörður

Valdimar is particularly excited about the move of the Hafnarfjörður library to the Fjörður, where it will be transformed into a multimedia centre for the people of Hafnarfjörður and their visitors. „The library will be the heart of culture and education in the town. It will be a vibrant hub for all age groups, a place where people meet, learn, create and enjoy each other's company.“

The mayor has been out and about in the town, visiting businesses and learning about their operations. He says it is important to hear what is on the minds of those who run businesses in Hafnarfjörður. „It is very important to me to visit the businesses in the town and learn about the diverse and dynamic work that takes place there. That is where you see the drive, the ingenuity and the collaboration that make Hafnarfjörður the unique place that it is.“
