Pupil numbers are slightly increasing in Hafnarfjörður's primary schools, and the formal school year began today.

Formal school term for pupils in Hafnarfjörður's primary schools began today. Just over 4,000 children are starting school this autumn, 95 of whom are beginning their education at the new Skarðshlíðarskóli. This winter, Skarðshlíðarskóli will be based in the parish hall of Ástjarnarkirkja. The foundation stone for the school's new building was laid yesterday, 21 August, and lessons will begin in the new school in Skarðshlíð in the autumn of 2018.

Just over 400 children are starting Year 1, while around 350 pupils completed Year 10 last spring, so pupil numbers in the primary schools are increasing slightly. The increase from last year will be around 100 pupils, but the exact figure will not be known until later in the autumn.

Starting primary school is a big step in every child's life, and at such a milestone the collaboration between home and school is extremely important. Later this autumn, parents of Year 1 pupils will receive a special booklet about the start of their primary school journey.

All the schools' websites provide good information about the work and priorities of the schools, and it is interesting to take the time to look at them with your child. The primary schools' websites:

Hafnarfjörður now provides primary school pupils with learning materials free of charge. Schools will therefore purchase the stationery that pupils need for their schoolwork. In this way, pupils will receive notebooks, pens, folders and other such items as they need for their daily schoolwork, in addition to the textbooks which have always been provided free of charge.
