Obituary – Björgvin Halldórsson

„It is with great sadness that we, the people of Hafnarfjörður, bid farewell to Björgvin Halldórsson. With his passing, one of Hafnarfjörður's most beloved sons is gone, a man who always carried his hometown with him and spoke of it with warmth, pride and sincere affection,“ writes the Mayor of Hafnarfjörður in a tribute to our Björgvin Halldórsson, the singer and Hafnarfjörður resident.

The funeral of Björgvin Halldórsson will be held at Hallgrímskirkja today. The Reverend Guðni Már Harðarson will officiate. The service is open to the public and can be streamed from the Bæjarbíó in the heart of Hafnarfjörður. The venue opens at 14:30. The reception following the service will be held at Ásvellir. All are welcome.

„Björgvin was truly a son of Hafnarfjörður in the deepest sense of the word. He never forgot where he came from, and those of us who listened to him and followed his career always felt that. He often mentioned Hafnarfjörður and always spoke of his town with affection. Björgvin was a proud Hafnarfjörður and we were no less proud of him. He was named the City of Hafnarfjörður's Artist of the Year in 2018 and was the first to have his name inscribed on a beautiful plaque in front of the Bæjarbíó cinema, a building from which Björgvin had countless fond memories.

This pride can be well encapsulated in a snippet of text from the song “Heim í Hafnarfjörð' which he sang with Brimkló, where it says, among other things:

,By Hafnarfjörður, by Hafnarfjörður,

I think I like being on Earth best.

In Hafnarfjörður, in Hafnarfjörður

Come on, let's bring the whole lot to Hafnarfjörður.“

Björgvin's contribution to music is priceless. His contribution lives on in our culture, in our music, in our memories, and in the countless moments he gave to people all over the country. But for us, the people of Hafnarfjörður, it also resides in something else, something greater. It resides in the feeling that one of our own has enriched the lives of so many and carried the name of our town with dignity and warmth.

Such an impact is invaluable. Björgvin brought us joy. He brought us pride. He gave us the powerful feeling that Hafnarfjörður held a special place in his heart, just as it held a special place in the hearts of the people of Hafnarfjörður. For that, we must be grateful.

As the Mayor of Hafnarfjörður, I would like to express my sincere gratitude on behalf of the town's residents. We thank him for his contribution, for his loyalty to his hometown, and for all the pride and joy he brought us through his life and work. His memory will live on, both in the hearts of the people and in the history of Hafnarfjörður.

In closing, I offer my deepest condolences to Ragnheiður, Sigurður, Svala, Krumma and other relatives.“
