Tell us about something that annoyed or made you laugh in the new book club from Hreiðrið and the library. The first meeting is next Tuesday. The club is for 16-25 year-olds.

Make yourself at home with a book in The Nest

Which character last made you laugh? Who annoyed you? What did you think? These will be the questions that Hugrún Margrét asks for answers to in the town's first book club for 16-25 year-olds. The club is called Síðan.

Hugrún runs the book club at Hreiðrið in the Innovation Centre by the Stream every other Tuesday at 5:30 p.m., starting on Tuesday, 10th March. So there's no time to lose, you'd better start reading!

The book club is a collaboration between our library and the youth centre. „Usually, book clubs involve everyone reading the same book and talking about it, but in this one, there are two themes to choose from at each meeting,“ says Hugrún. „It opens up that personal connection and allows everyone to speak from their own experience, rather than being stuck on what they're supposed to feel based on established reviews of the books. It therefore becomes each individual's own personal take.“

Hugrún is looking forward to the discussion. „We start the work in the Nest. The first three or four meetings will be there and then we'll move to the library. So we're going to keep it as democratic as possible, but we also want to offer workshops.“ The programme is now being advertised in youth centres and secondary schools.

Tailored to the group

Hugrún Margrét says she has long wanted to do something for this age group. „I feel there's a lot on offer for younger kids, but not for this age. I'm not in a book club myself, because I read what I want to read. But I do enjoy thinking about things and discussing them. Then I went to the Landsfundur Upplýsingar conference last year. There was a Tanzanian-Sambian speaker there who runs a book club for people who don't read books. This club is spin-off He dives into the books and tells the story, but I wanted the books to come from the participants.“

Hugrún Margrét is excited to see who will come. „This will be interesting. It's fun to hold the club in these two locations, depending on the club's activities and the voices of the group. We want this to be an interactive club, like everything else here at the library.“

Laughter prevails over irritation

Hugrún herself is presenting Kokkál by Dóra DNA.  „I laughed out loud,“ she says. But which character last annoyed her? „I blessedly forget books where characters annoy me. I suppose it must have been Bjartur in the Summerhouses. He was just such a whinger,“ she says, laughing.
