The Bjartir dagar cultural festival begins in Hafnarfjörður tomorrow, Saturday 1st June, on the town's 116th anniversary, and a varied and entertaining programme of events will be on offer throughout June. The festival reflects the diverse cultural life of Hafnarfjörður – everyone is welcome!

The Bjartir dagar cultural festival begins in Hafnarfjörður tomorrow, Saturday 1st June, on the town's 116th anniversary. The festival celebrates its 21st anniversary this year, and a diverse and fun programme of events will be on offer throughout June. The festival reflects the diverse cultural life that takes place. On the festival's opening day this year, on the birthday itself, there is a presidential election, and residents of Hafnarfjörður are encouraged to exercise their right to vote. Joy will be in full swing at the Hafnarfjörður Library with summer reading, princesses and Dr Bæk. You can enjoy art and culture with a visit to the Hafnarfjörður Museum of Local History and Hafnarborg. All the exhibition houses of the Folk Museum open on 1 June each year, and yesterday a new exhibition opened at Hafnarborg. So it's absolutely ideal to go for a swim!

Summer celebrated with a variety of festivities

Bjartir dagar is a participation festival which relies on institutions, voluntary organisations, businesses, sports clubs, musicians and individuals taking part in creating events throughout the town connected to the festival, or participating in the programmes organised by others. The energy and vibrancy of the arts scene in Hafnarfjörður has been reflected, for example, in the 'Walk into Town' event, where artists, designers and craftspeople from the area, from the small boat harbour to the town centre, open their studios on the evening of Friday, 7th June. June and welcome visitors and passers-by. Additionally, some shops in the town centre will be open late into the evening, providing a perfect opportunity to shop for unique design and art in the heart of Hafnarfjörður. Various music events feature prominently in this year's Bjartra Dagar programme, as in previous years, and there are also many sporting events throughout the health-focused city of Hafnarfjörður, with the Hafnarfjörður Run taking place on the 8th. June, the Hafnarfjörður Run will be held on the town's streets, placing it among a select few road races in Iceland.
