Bryndís takes over the Innovation Centre by the Stream

The Innovation Centre at Lækinn has a new director who is now shaping its activities, aiming to be up and running at full steam this autumn. The old Lækjarskóli is once again coming alive, as there will be plenty to do and get up to in the building.

The Innovation Centre gets a new director

„A great deal of work has been done here, but now I am taking over and opening the Innovation Centre,“ says Bryndís Steina Friðgeirsdóttir, the new director of the Innovation Centre by the Stream. The Innovation Centre is located on the ground floor of the old Lækjarskóli school. There, as before, ideas, projects and more life will come to the building as the year progresses.

„I'm very excited about the project,“ says Bryndís, who was in the middle of preparations when a representative from the City of Hafnarfjörður called by. She was receiving pallets from IKEA containing kitchen islands and office furniture, so that the ideas can become a reality.

„We're now starting to tidy up and arrange things to get the house ready. Our space is on the first floor of the house. “There are plans for 3D, laser and vinyl cutting, to name but a few," says Bryndís, running through the corridors to show the space designated for the Innovation Centre and the youth centre, which is moving into the building.

„We will look to start courses related to the arts and creative work. Last but not least, a youth centre will also be included here. So, there are exciting times ahead.“ The activities will flourish steadily, and it is realistic to be up and running in full swing by the autumn.

Knew the vision

Bryndís was previously an education specialist at FAB LAB Reykjavík, where she managed international projects. „It's a digital workshop that will be one of the hubs here with us,“ she says. „I came here in the spring and met my predecessor, so I was already familiar with the house's vision. I applied and got the job.“

Both Bryndís and her husband now work in Hafnarfjörður, he at Hraunvallaskóli. They have got to know the town's good atmosphere and are captivated by it. „It will be fun to get to know more of the other activities in the town, such as St. Jó, the cultural museums and the library,“ she says. „It will also be fun to become even more immersed in this positive spirit that I feel is here.“

Excited about ideas

Bryndís encourages people to find out about the work and get involved. It is very good to come to the old Lækjarskóli.

„It's obvious that many people are very fond of this house,“ she says. „There's hardly a person who doesn't have a story connected to the house.“ People have good memories of the house.

„And it would be great to create new ones here at the Innovation Centre by the Stream.“
