At a meeting of the Family Council last Friday, a proposal was approved for a new 60-bed care home to be built on the Sólvang site, in accordance with the existing agreement with the Ministry of Welfare from 2010. Furthermore, the mayor was instructed to enter into formal discussions with the Ministry of Welfare regarding an increase in nursing home places in the town, as there is an urgent need for further development in the coming years.
It was agreed to refer the proposal to the town council, which is meeting on Wednesday.
A report accompanying the proposal states that the location is in line with current policy on matters concerning older people, in that Sólvangur will become the centre for elderly care services in Hafnarfjörður. Various support services are already in place, which are important to have in the vicinity of a new care home, and the current detailed plan also allows for a 4,000 sq m extension on the site.
Capacent compared the location options in the autumn of 2014. Their conclusion was that, according to the weighted score, the Sólvang site is the most cost-effective option for the construction of a new care home.
The report can be accessed here.
Preparations will begin in the coming weeks, and it is expected that a new care home will open in April 2018.
