Change to the school canteen
For the next four years, ISS will produce and serve meals for pupils and staff of the nursery and primary school, along with a summary after each meal. A strong emphasis is placed on nutrition, environmental considerations and food waste. Options include a regular subscription for five days a week, daily selection, or purchasing individual meals.
The City of Hafnarfjörður has entered into a contract with ISS for the production of meals for Hafnarfjörður's nursery and primary schools for 2016-2020. ISS will be responsible for providing meals for pupils and staff, as well as clearing up after meals. Three companies took part in the council's tender for the service: Skólamatur, ISS and SS. At its meeting on 30 June, the Council approved entering into a contract with ISS, as the company was found to have the most favourable bid. A strong emphasis will be placed on nutrition, environmental considerations and food waste in the production and service of meals. Customers can choose a fixed subscription for five days a week, daily selection, or purchase individual meals.
The agreement covers ten schools.
ISS has, by signing a contract, taken on the production and service of food for Hraunvallar School. Hvaleyrarskóli, Lækjarskóli, Setbergsskóli, Öldutúnsskóli, Engidalsskóli, Víðistaðaskóli, the nursery at Hraunvallar skóli, the nursery Álfaberg and the nursery Bjarkalund. The contract period is four years, with provisions to extend it twice for one year if both parties so wish. The maximum contract period can therefore be 6 years from the date of signing.
Implementation and arrangements
In the primary schools of Hafnarfjörður, a hot meal will, as before, be available for pupils and staff at lunchtime. In the nursery schools of Hafnarfjörður, breakfast, lunch and an afternoon snack are available. ISS handles subscriptions and the collection of payments for meals, and maintains a record of sales. A fixed subscription to meals can be purchased, but it is also possible to select the individual weekdays you require a meal and pay only for those days. Additionally, individual meals can be purchased. The contract with ISS clearly stipulates that meals must be prepared in accordance with the latest dietary guidelines, with an emphasis on quality and variety. The menu for both school stages is to be composed in such a way that a balance is always maintained between healthiness (nutritional value, content and portion sizes), taste, appearance and safety, with the lunch providing approximately 30% of the total daily energy intake.
The School Menu provides information on the weekly menu for each nursery and primary school, as well as details on its nutritional content. This is done to inform the parents and carers of children and young people about how the recommendations of the Office of the Chief Medical Officer on the nutritional value of meals are being implemented. When developing the menu, the following is taken into consideration:
- Fish twice a week (salmon or trout once every six weeks)
- A vegetable dish at least once a week, every six weeks
- Meal replacements once a week (soups, porridge, skyr and yoghurt)
- Meat dish once a week (processed meat products are four times a year)
- homemade breads
- Drinks available include water and/or semi-skimmed milk with most meals.
All changes, whether concerning the daily plan, payment methods or the cancellation of a subscription, must be made before the 21st of the month preceding the month in which the changes are to take effect.
