From 21st to 24th May 2021, a clean-up day is taking place in Hafnarfjörður under the heading Let's clean up Hafnarfjörður Residents of Hafnarfjörður can then dispose of garden waste in a container at the local primary school. The containers will be at the schools from 5 p.m. on Friday, 21st May until the end of the day on Monday, 24th May. Residents of Hafnarfjörður are encouraged to use the service or to take their bags directly to Sorpa. See opening hours for the Breiðhelli tip here.
Please note that garden waste must not be put into bags in the bin; instead, the contents of the bags should be emptied directly into the bin.
Residents are encouraged to use recycled packaging or reusable bags for the clean-up. It is also ideal, where possible, to collect garden waste in a compost heap in a convenient spot in the garden and use it for composting. Residents in all neighbourhoods of Hafnarfjörður are encouraged to take an active part in the clean-up. It is ideal, in the run-up to and during the clean-up days, to get to work in the garden, pruning bushes and flowerbeds.
Change to the cleaning arrangements
The implementation and arrangement of clean-up days in Hafnarfjörður were changed in 2020. Unprecedented times called for a change, and in light of the success, ongoing public health measures and environmental considerations, it has been decided to continue with the revised arrangement. The change in procedure led, among other things, to a significant reduction in the amount of plastic bags and landfill associated with garden clearances, while recycling and composting have increased accordingly.
Duties of landowners
In light of recent events, special attention is drawn to the fact that landowners are required to keep the growth of trees and shrubs on their land within the property boundaries. Tree growth can cause inconvenience and even danger to pedestrians and motorists. Plot owners are also advised that specific regulations apply to the construction of a boundary wall and fencing on the plot, which it is important to familiarise themselves with.
