Urban Density – Report
A professional working group has spent the past few months assessing the potential opportunities for urban densification in the neighbourhoods of Hafnarfjörður and on the outskirts of the built-up area. The findings are now available.
A working group was appointed by the Planning and Building Committee of Hafnarfjörður at the end of 2014 to assess the potential that may exist in the neighbourhoods of Hafnarfjörður and on the edges of the built-up area for urban densification. The group has now completed its work and submitted a report to the Planning and Building Committee, a report which will be presented to the Hafnarfjörður Town Council next week.
The working group's work is based on the 2013-2025 Master Plan for Hafnarfjörður, the Regional Plan for the Capital Region 2040 and statistical data used in the preparation of the regional plan, along with the existing traffic forecast and traffic counts in Hafnarfjörður. The report includes an analysis of the composition of the Borough of Hafnarfjörður, with a focus on the following aspects:
- Development and composition of the built environment
- Population and jobs
- Transport
- Hafnarfjörður town centre
- Nature and outdoor activities
The report includes, among other things, the main challenges, a strategy for diverse development opportunities within the urban area over the next twenty-five years, different scenarios showing the main development priorities, as well as proposals for consolidation and development areas. The work has raised many questions which will be sought to be answered in the coming weeks and months:
- What kind of town does Hafnarfjörður want to become?
- How fast should the construction be?
- Should the historical and cultural heritage on which the City of Hafnarfjörður is based be strengthened?
- Should the development of new districts be promoted to the south on the edge of the capital region?
This report highlights the main advantages and disadvantages of two different approaches to future development. The report can therefore form the basis for a forecast for the review of the Master Plan for Hafnarfjörður.
We encourage all residents to familiarise themselves with the contents of the report and to take an active part in the presentation and discussion of the findings at Hafnarborg in March. The report can be found Here
The programme will be announced later.
