Representatives of the City of Hafnarfjörður, the Road Administration and the contractor behind the construction of a new flyover junction for the Reykjanesbraut and Krýsuvíkurveg met today to formally perform the first sod-turning for the project. Construction work will begin immediately, as the project must be completed in a short timeframe and be finished by 1 November.
This week, representatives of Loftorka, Suðurverk and the Road Administration signed a contract for the construction of a roundabout at the junction of Reykjanesbraut and Krýsuvíkurveg. The project is a collaboration between the Road Administration, the Municipality of Hafnarfjörður and utility companies. Contractors have already set up a site camp in the area and are currently preparing for the works. The project will begin with the relocation of various pipelines and the installation of a bypass, before construction of the bridge itself commences.
„It is very pleasing to see the construction get underway, and it is very encouraging how quickly the project is due to be completed.“ says Haraldur L. Haraldsson, Mayor of Hafnarfjörður. „We have high hopes that the work will meet its deadlines and that at the beginning of November, the junction will be fully operational. This project has a significant and positive impact on the local community and business life in this area, and the execution and pace of the work are hopefully a model for future roadworks in Hafnarfjörður. “Traffic through the area has increased manifold and there is a great need for further works on at least two roundabouts, the dualling of roads and more connections in Hafnarfjörður." says Haraldur.
VSÓ ráðgjöf ehf. will carry out the supervision, having submitted the lowest bid for this work at 19.4 million króna. The estimated contractor cost was 21 million króna. The project itself costs much more, but Loftorka ehf. and Suðurverk ehf. jointly submitted the lowest bid of 918 million króna, while the estimated contractor cost was around 817 million króna. Various costs for the project's preparation and design are also added. The work involves the construction of a grade-separated junction at the intersection of the Reykjanesbraut and Krýsuvíkurvegur, as well as all road and path construction necessary to complete the project. The works also include alterations to Krýsuvíkurveg, the construction of a connecting road to Suðurbraut and a connecting road to Selhæð. Also included is the construction of a foot and cycle path along the Suðurbraut connection and speed calming measures on Suðurbraut. The construction of noise barriers on the Reykjanesbraut and in the Hellnahverfi area of Hafnarfjörður is also part of the project. The project also includes alterations to the utility networks, as well as new installations and landscaping, along with other elements necessary to complete the work.
