Construction in the heart of Hafnarfjörður
Plans for an ambitious development in the centre of Hafnarfjörður were presented at a meeting of the Hafnarfjörður town council in June 2021. Previous plans for a 100-room hotel at Fjarðargata 13-15 (formerly Strandgata 26–30) in Hafnarfjörður have evolved into exciting ideas and plans for a supermarket and services on the ground floor, a new modern library and a multimedia centre, a public park on the second floor and hotel apartments in small houses along Strandgata.
Construction began in autumn 2022.
Construction work on the development of the building site, bounded by Fjarðargata 13-15 (formerly Strandgata 26-30), began in the autumn of 2022. The works are expected to take at least two years and will involve considerable disruption and disturbance for residents and traffic in the area. The main plans were approved at the end of September 2022. The project is being led by the company 220 Miðbær ehf, which owns the building plot.

Impact of the works
Groundworks began in November 2022, the erection of the building will be carried out mainly in 2023, and it is planned that the building will be commissioned at the end of 2025, with occupation continuing into 2026.
The housebuilder will focus on causing as little disruption as possible for residents and road users during the works, but it is clear that some disruption will be unavoidable. The Strand will be narrowed. The pavement on one side will be closed and pedestrian traffic will be moved across the road. Access to the site for the contractor will be from three locations: Strandgata, the car park at Hafnarborg, and the area behind 24 Strandgata. Material deliveries can be expected at these locations. A diversion for vehicle traffic is also planned behind 31 and 33 Strandgata while the concreting work is in progress.
