About the Skarðshlíðar neighbourhood

Skarðshlíð is a family-friendly residential area in Hafnarfjörður, situated on a flat and a slope to the south and west of the Ásfjall. The design and planning of the neighbourhood emphasised a holistic vision, cohesive streetscapes, sustainable development, green aesthetics, and diverse outdoor spaces. All amenities are within easy reach, employment opportunities in the local area are plentiful, and there is close proximity to the Hafnarfjörður uplands and beautiful natural attractions. Development in the neighbourhood is already well underway.

The first residents moved into the neighbourhood in the summer of 2019, by which time Skarðshlíð School was already in full swing, and a nursery school opened in the autumn under the same roof. In the summer of 2020, the school community's premises in Skarðshlíð were completed and today house a comprehensive primary school, a four-department nursery school, a music school, and a sports hall for both school stages. The schools and their activities partly serve the new development in Skarðshlíð and Vallahverfi. Furthermore, further development of sports facilities at Ásvellir is planned, which will further improve the nearby services and amenities in the neighbourhoods. The dualling of the Reykjanesbraut was completed at the end of 2020, and in the spring, work began on the Ásvallabraut, which connects the Vallahverfi, Skarðshlíðarhverfi and Ásland districts. The Ásvallabraut was opened in the autumn of 2021, thereby better connecting Skarðshlíð and the inner neighbourhoods of Völlunum to Kaldárselsvegur and the Reykjanesbraut.

Mixed residential development

Skarðshlíð is a mixed development of detached houses, semi-detached houses, terraced houses and low-rise blocks of flats. Plots for detached houses are situated on the flat near the school, but the development then rises up the Skarðshlíðarbrekkan slope, with terraced and semi-detached houses at the bottom and detached houses further up where the gradient is steeper. The neighbourhood is designed to welcome everyone, whether it's couples, small or large families, or older people who want to downsize but still move into a new home. The neighbourhood schools, Skarðshlíðarskóli and Skarðshlíðarleikskóli, have already opened, sharing the same building. The Hafnarfjörður Music School has also been operating in the building since the autumn of 2020.

Good transport links

Transport links between neighbourhoods are fairly good and are constantly improving. A new flyover has been opened, and the dualling of the Reykjanesbraut was completed in late autumn 2020. Ásvallabraut, which connects the district to Kaldárselsveg, opened in autumn 2021 and facilitates traffic to and from the district.
