Westfjordar people on a visit

After some thought, the Hornarfjörður Youth Council contacted the Hafnarfjörður Youth Council. The Hornfirðingar arrived in the area in April and stayed at Húsið, Staðarberg 6. Together, the group attended an UMFÍ course – “Show What You're Made Of', played team-building games, had a tour of The House, went swimming, and took part in peer education, as well as cooking a meal together.  Visits like these create opportunities for the youth councils, and by extension the young people themselves, to learn from one another and share experiences and knowledge. Such informal learning is conducive to enhancing personal, social and professional development.

Training in public speaking

Fifteen representatives from the Hornafjörður Youth Council and the Hafnarfjörður Youth Council attended the course „Show What You're Made Of“ together. The young people did exercises and received training from Sabína Steinunn Halldórsdóttir, a national representative for UMFÍ, in public speaking, giving speeches and working with meeting procedures. Sabína has extensive experience working with teenagers and young people on educational and preventative issues; for example, she organised the UMFÍ youth conference, 'Young People and Democracy', which was held in Selfoss in mid-March. The course was part of a joint training day for the youth councils, and they went on to other activities later in the day.

Show what you're made of!

The course „Show What You're Made Of“ is a social education programme offered by UMFÍ to everyone who wants to take part. The course covers various aspects related to public speaking, such as how to speak up, demeanour, delivery, vocal use, organising a speech, and more. The course also covers various aspects of meeting management, including rules of procedure, convening meetings, meeting organisation, agendas, discussions, handling motions, voting, and more. Participants work on simple tasks and take part in games to break up the course.
