The GOLA flute duet

As part of the Creative Summer Jobs scheme, Svanhildur Júlía Alexandersdóttir and Hildur Arna Hrafnsdóttir have been travelling around the town all summer under the name GOLA, playing beautiful tunes on their flutes for the town's residents. Among other places, they have performed at the Austurgata Festival on the 17th of June, in cafés, care homes and nurseries, introducing this beautiful instrument to audiences.

Aspiring professional flautists

„Our names are Svanhildur and Hildur, and we are the transverse flute duo Gola. We have been playing music for people all over the town of Hafnarfjörður this summer. We have both been playing the flute for about nine years and are studying music at the Music Conservatory. We aim to become professional flautists in the future.“

Art Festival in Hellisgerði

Creative Summer Jobs 2024 welcomes residents to an art exhibition in Hellisgerði, where two projects will be premiered on Saturday, 10 August. The exhibition begins at 13:30 with a musical performance from the musicians of GOLA. Following a light concert, the artist Brynja Waage will welcome guests to a show of her works, which will be located throughout the garden. The works are stunning and reflect Brynja's vision of Hafnarfjörður and her experience of the town's nature. Nature plays a larger role in this exhibition than usual, as the paint Brynja used on the works is water-soluble. So, if it rains, it will be a decision by nature and Hellisgerði in all its glory to blend into the final outcome and put its mark on the works. It will therefore be a true festival of art in Hellisgerði, and we encourage all interested parties to come along and enjoy the creative spirit in the beautiful park!

About Creative Summer Jobs 2024

In the summer of 2021, the Municipality of Hafnarfjörður, in collaboration with the town's youth centre, Hamarinn, decided to revive the “Creative Summer Jobs” project, which had been run in the summer of 2017. Individuals and groups aged 18-25 were also invited to submit ideas for creative projects in Hafnarfjörður. Selected groups were given the opportunity to work on various creative projects in different artistic fields that would also liven up the town's social life, delighting tourists and residents in one way or another. The staff of Creative Summer Jobs, run as part of the Hafnarfjörður Summer School, are tasked with bringing the town to life, making it more fun, beautiful and diverse with artistic and creative events. The projects are varied and appeal to different age groups and interests. Klara Ósk Elíasdóttir is the project manager for Creative Summer Jobs.

This year, there are seven diverse groups and individuals working as part of the creative summer jobs scheme, and they will be featured weekly over the summer.
