Hafnarfjörður is looking for fir trees in gardens that may have outgrown their welcome with their owners. Do you have a tree in your garden that could bring joy during the Advent season?

Hafnarfjörður is looking for fir trees in gardens that may have finished their purpose for their owners. We are getting into the Christmas spirit.

Do you have a tree in your garden that could be a source of joy during Advent?

Yew trees can become very tall and wide, often taking up a considerable amount of space in domestic gardens. Residents often have problems with these trees, and they are costly for garden owners to remove. Therefore, a decision was made a few years ago to kill two birds with one stone by offering a cost-effective exchange for both parties, where the benefits are for everyone. The council sends staff and equipment to remove the tree free of charge for residents, allowing the tree to be enjoyed as a source of festive cheer. The resident gains more space in their garden, and once Advent is over, the tree is recycled into wood chippings for use around the town. It should be noted that this is only part of the Christmas and New Year decorations that the City of Hafnarfjörður puts up each year; lighting is also installed in several leafy trees throughout the town. Then, so-called light trails and light displays are set up on lampposts, along with beautiful decorations in the Christmas Village in Hafnarfjörður, a visit to which has become an essential part of the Advent season for many people each year.

Does your tree meet the following conditions?

The conditions are that the tree must have reached a height of at least five metres, that its growth pattern is good, i.e. that the tree is well-branched all the way around, and that it is easy to get to in order to fell it at ground level. The trees will be felled and erected at pre-determined locations between 7 November and 23 November.
