The Hafnarfjörður Town Council confirmed at its meeting on the 19th of February The recent resolution of the Hafnarfjörður Education Committee from the committee's meeting on 12 February last. to make Engidalsskóli an independent primary school from the autumn of 2020. The Director of the Education and Public Health Department has been tasked with working with the school's staff during the transition process and advertising the new position of headteacher.

The proposal for Engidal School's independence was put forward on the grounds that there is no cost-effectiveness in operating a primary school with one large unit and another smaller one. It is estimated that the cost of implementing the proposal will be negligible. Initially, Engidal School will be a primary school for years 1 to 6, and year 7 pupils will attend Víðistaðaskóli. The youth clubs for Víðistaðaskóli and Engidalsskóli will continue to be run together at Víðistaðaskóli, but the after-school clubs will be run separately, as is the case at present. In the future, it is planned that Engidalsskóli will become a primary school for years 1–7, run in the same building as the Álfaberg nursery school, as the current plan provides for. It is projected that from autumn 2020, there will be around 200 pupils at the school.
