International cooperation and knowledge exchange

Sixteen Estonian specialists from the Pernova educational institution – Pernova Hariduskeskus, visited the nursery school Norðurberg here in Hafnarfjörður yesterday.

The aim was to learn about the school's Green Flag work. The Green Flag is an international project that Landvernd is a member of, and its aim is to increase environmental education and strengthen environmental awareness in schools.

The experts are on a few-day visit to the country and covered a lot of ground, visiting Landvernd, museums and institutions. Earlier in the day, they had visited Ártúnsskóli, which is also a Green Flag school.

Enchanted by the surroundings

Anna Borg Harðardóttir, head teacher of the Norðurberg nursery school, gave a talk to the group. „It was great fun. They were enthusiastic and enjoyed coming into the nursery school, as they had all worked in primary schools and had received the Green Flag three years ago,“ she says.

„They were captivated by our environment here in Norðurberg. We showed them the outdoor classrooms, among other things,“ says Anna.

„We also gave them some traditional Icelandic food. Dried fish, malt beer and Icelandic sweets. They were particularly impressed by the malt, thought the fish was fantastic and wanted to know where they could get some to take home,“ says Anna.

Six-division Green Flag Nursery School

Sigurlaug Arnardóttir is the project manager for Landvernd's education team, the Green Flag and Environmental News People, and led the group, which had also visited Landvernd.

The Norðurberg Nursery School is located in the north of Hafnarfjörður and opened on 16 August 1982. Today, Norðurberg is a six-unit nursery school with space for 101 children at any one time and up to 34 staff members.
