European Mobility Week begins today, on Icelandic Nature Day, and this year's theme is „Let's choose green mobility“. The Mobility Week, which aims to encourage sustainable transport, runs from 16th to 22nd September. This year, the focus is particularly on the positive trend of more and more people travelling between places in an environmentally friendly way, and as a result, the number of those using modes of transport other than the private car has increased.

European Mobility Week begins today, on Icelandic Nature Day, and this year's theme is „Choose Green“. The Mobility Week, which aims to encourage environmentally friendly transport, runs from 16th to 22nd September. This year, the focus is particularly on the positive trend of more and more people travelling between places in an environmentally friendly way, and as a result, the number of those using modes of transport other than the private car has increased.

The City of Hafnarfjörður is taking part in Mobility Week, along with municipalities across the country. The car park on Strandgata in Hafnarfjörður will be turfed this week, and the project is the municipality's symbolic contribution. By replacing a grey, tarmacked area with a green one, more space is given to pedestrians and cyclists in the town centre at the expense of cars.

This year's Mobility Week particularly prominent on social media

This year's Mobility Week will be particularly prominent on social media. Lessons learned from transport during the coronavirus pandemic and lockdown will be discussed, along with the introduction of cycle and walking paths in the capital region. The public is also invited to take part in a survey entitled „Which mode of transport are you?“, which playfully points out environmentally friendly alternatives to the private car. A Mobility Week bus will be travelling the streets of the capital throughout European Mobility Week.

Modes of transport that have a positive impact on the environment and the atmosphere

Since 2002, cities and towns in Iceland have taken part in a coordinated European initiative by local authorities to promote sustainable transport. The initiative is called European Mobility Week and is held from 16th to 22nd September each year. The aim of the week is to introduce urban residents to modes of transport that are simultaneously environmentally friendly, cost-effective, and improve people's health, while having a positive impact on the environment and the atmosphere. Companies, institutions and organisations can also register individual events or activities designed to promote sustainable transport. The theme of this project is MobilityActions on English which has been translated as Transportplus in Icelandic. Further information about European Mobility Week in Iceland can be found at Facebook page of the week. You can read more about the initiative at www.mobilityweek.eu.

Which mode of transport are you?

Deep down, we all have a little cutie who wants to do their best to live a healthy life, be thrifty with their money, and look after the environment so our planet stays a livable place for everyone.  To mark European Mobility Week, 16th–22nd September, you can now find out which mode of transport suits you best in this endeavour. This year's Mobility Week is being launched with a survey that we encourage everyone to take part in.
