Let's wrap the tree in beautiful memories and love.

The Tree of Mourning will be lit in Hellisgerði on 26 November. We will meet at the St. Jó Wellbeing Centre at 41 Suðurgata in Hafnarfjörður at 5 p.m., where the chairperson of the Centre for Grief will say a few words about Christmas and grief. Afterwards, we will walk together to Hellisgerði, where the Kópavogur Women's Choir will sing a few songs before the Tree of Grief is lit. The Tree of Grief is dressed in its finery over the Christmas period, but is then adorned in different ways throughout the seasons. The Bereavement Centre would like to encourage those who are grieving to sit under the tree, at any time, and in doing so, to envelop the tree with beautiful memories and love.

About the Tree of Sorrow in Hellisgerði

The Christmas-decorated Hellisgerði has become a fixture in many people's Christmas celebrations, and this beautiful garden envelops us as we walk inside. It was therefore easy to decide where the Tree of Remembrance would be placed. The idea behind the Tree of Remembrance is that all those who have lost a loved one can sit beneath the tree and remember those who have passed away during the bittersweet time that Advent and Christmas often are for the bereaved. The Bereavement Tree is also intended to draw attention to the plight of those who are grieving at this time of year. With the addition of the tree, a cosy and beautiful place can be offered in the heart of Hafnarfjörður, providing comfort and warmth for the bereaved. Sometimes, due to distance, we are unable to visit the grave of a loved one. It is also good to have more places in our local area where we can spend time with ourselves and our memories of the deceased. Hellisgerði is almost magical, especially at this time of year; the garden is perfectly suited to holding all the memories that flit through our minds as we walk around. You could say that the Tree of Sorrow thrives on memories and flourishes with them over time. You are welcome to tag @sorgarmidstod in photos of the Tree of Sorrow, and even share the name of a loved one, in the run-up to Christmas so we can foster a sense of community with those who are missing their loved ones over the festive period.
