Jóhanna Margrétardóttir was born and raised in Hafnarfjörður. She lived here until 2012. As a teenager, she used to go to an amusement arcade and a newsagent's located in this very same building, to play video games, smoke and frighten people and passers-by.
She meticulously choreographs her comeback show, staging its premiere in her hometown. She has chosen this moment and this place with precision for her return. With her eternal comeback*, of punk or both.
(site and city specific installation) an installation in consideration of time and place, through research and experience of the town. The feeling and the need to belong, or not to belong, with one's life course and body as its temporal framework. Blood, glass, [im]prints, projection and light are the media used as a material interpretation of this process.
She openly and courageously asks us to consider what and how we choose to interpret and experience a moment, a place, and our reflections (toposana), and what we want to do with what has been given to us and the time we are given. With this in mind – do you want to accept, challenge or adapt to the circumstances?
Regardless of the answer, this inquiry secures its place on that sharp line of candour and loyalty characteristic of Icelandic women artists, a line that spans many decades.
What is it that makes us who we are?
How do we choose to become what we are*?

as is expressed in the works of Friedrich Nietzsche

Jóhanna Margrétardóttir was born and raised in Hafnarfjörður. She lived here until 2012. As a teenager, she used to frequent this very building to smoke, play video games and scare passers-by.
With her first solo exhibition in her hometown, she diligently choreographs her—this time chosen—return. An eternal return* or a punk's return or both.
Her site- and city-specific installation researches locality, the sense and need of belonging and of not belonging, with one's lifespan and body as timeframes. Blood, glass, [im]prints, projection and light are the media that materialise this process.
She bravely and openly asks us to reflect on what we choose to do with the space, topos and time we are given. To abide by them, shape them, or challenge and overcome them.
Irrespective of what the answer is, that inquiry alone earns her a place in that bright line of outspoken and dedicated female Icelandic artists that spans many decades.
What makes us, us?
How do we choose to become who we are?
