Antonio Vivaldi is one of the foremost composers of the Baroque period. Glorian was composed in 1715 and has become one of his most famous church works. The work is based on the Latin Mass text „Gloria in excelsis Deo“, Glory be to God in the highest, and is composed of twelve movements that alternate between powerful choral sections and intimate arias for soloists. With its bright D major key and lively orchestration, Vivaldi captures the festive and joyful nature of the religious text.
Today, the Gloria is one of the most performed choral works of the Baroque period and has been heard at concerts all over the world. In this concert, the audience will have the opportunity to enjoy the work in all its splendour – where the interplay between choir, soloists and orchestra leads us into a soundscape that is both celebratory and heartfelt.

The programme also includes works and carols by Jón Ásgeirsson and the newly appointed choirmaster of the national church, Sigurður Flosason, Mozart, Bach and others.

The soloists will be they
Margrét Hrafnsdóttir, soprano, and Guðrún Jóhanna Ólafsdóttir, mezzo-soprano.

The accompaniment is provided by a chamber orchestra conducted by Gudbjartur Hakonarson.

Cantus is the new choir of Hafnarfjörður Church, holding its first concert here under the direction of Kári Þormar, choirmaster and organist of Hafnarfjörður Church.
