Flow measurement
Jónína Guðnadóttir (b. 1943) has for many years been at the forefront of Icelandic ceramic artists and early on attracted attention for her unique functional pieces. She has also developed an independent visual language in her artworks, which bear witness to her knowledge of clay, while her unique sense of form and wealth of ideas are also prominent. Jónina's career began in the mid-1960s, after she had studied fine art at the Iceland Academy of the Arts and the Reykjavík School of Art, and undertaken further studies in ceramics at Konstfack in Stockholm.
Since Jónína held her first solo exhibition at Unuhús in 1968, her works have been exhibited widely both at home and abroad. Her works have also been regularly exhibited at Hafnarborg over the past few decades. The retrospective exhibition also spans Flow measurement a retrospective of Jónina's career, which will feature a selection of the artist's works, from functional pieces created in her early years after graduating to works from the past year. The exhibition will be accompanied by a hardback, richly illustrated catalogue featuring an essay by curator and art historian Ásdís Valgeirsdóttir.
References
In the works of Þór Sigurþórsson (b. 1977), certain recurring themes can be found – to refer – leaving it to the viewer to see where it leads them. The artist often works with found or everyday objects, placing them in a new context to create unexpected connections across time and space. The material contains remnants of time and evokes reflections on repetition, the cycle, and the passage of time. Our understanding of everyday objects is thus turned on its head, revealing to us subtle yet sensitive visual poems, where experience, perception and processing refer to a transient world on the borderline between the articulate and the inarticulate.
Þór Sigurþórsson completed an MFA in Fine Art from the School of Visual Arts in New York in 2008. He had previously graduated with a BA in Fine Art from the Iceland Academy of the Arts in 2002, and has also studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. Þór has taken part in numerous group exhibitions at home and abroad, for example at Ásmundarsafn and the Hjólið outdoor exhibition series by the Sculptors' Association of Reykjavík. He has also held various solo exhibitions, including at Y Gallery, Hverfisgallerí and Harbinger. In 2015, Þór received a grant from the Svavar Guðnason and Ásta Eiríksdóttir Fund.
Free admission – see you at Hafnarborg.
