The Icelandic video game company Arctic Theory was founded in June 2020 by Matthías Guðmundsson, Gísli Konráðsson, Snorri Sturluson and Jón Bjarni Bjarndal. They have years of experience in the video game industry and have been involved in some of the most ambitious video games of recent decades, including EVE Online, The Sims and others. They have also been involved in the development of Iceland's largest video game companies over the years, including CCP Games, 1939 Games, Parity Games and Directive Games. The company, which is headquartered in Hafnarfjörður, has been working hard on the development of its first multiplayer game over the past few months, and it will be available soon. The game is inspired by the Icelandic nature, where the forces of nature play a major role. Last year, Arctic Theory received a grant from the R&D Fund to develop the GenOS simulation technology. The technology opens up the possibility of land and weather changes in a real-time multiplayer environment on an unprecedented scale. The GenOS technology is unique in that it is designed for experiences in the metaverse. The game will be available in a beta version by the end of 2022 on PC, and will later be available on other consoles.
