The first day of summer in Hafnarfjörður
The first day of summer 2026 will be celebrated with a variety of festivities throughout Hafnarfjörður! The Ásvallalaug and Suðurbæjarlaug swimming pools will be open from 8 am to 5 pm.
8 am – 5 pm. Swimming at Suðurbæjarlaug and Ásvallalaug.
10 am – 2 pm. Open house at the Hafnarfjörður Boarding Club, Selhæll 7. All welcome.
12 noon: Hafnarfjörður Cross-Country Race in the town centre of Hafnarfjörður
The warm-up starts at Thorsplan at 12 noon. The run will be along Strandgata and will be split into age groups after the warm-up. There is no entry fee for the run and registration is on the door. Category winners will receive trophies and all competitors will receive medals, kindly provided by the City of Hafnarfjörður. After the race, the FH athletics department will be introducing athletics on Thorsplani. There will be an opportunity to try long jump and shot put. Strandgata will be closed to car traffic during the run and until the parade sets off from Víðistaðatún at 13:15.
12 – 16 Hafnarfjörður Library – The Viking Society Rimmugýgur presents Norse sword fighting and runecasting!
At 13:00, Birita will join us in Dali to talk about divination runes and runic reading, as it is important to know what the summer has in store.
At 2 pm, valiant knights will arrive and have a swift joust for our entertainment.
12 – 17 Hafnarborg – Current exhibitions are 'Heiðvirðir einstaklingar í aðalstal' and 'Bergmál í Sverrissal'.
13:00-16:00 Open house at the Þyt Sailing Club, Strandgata 88
Beginners and experienced paddlers are invited to kayak (ages 9 and over) or paddle in rowing boats. Those with experience can go sailing in a dinghy, weather permitting.
Throughout the summer, the Þyt Sailing Club will be holding open evenings on Thursdays from 5 pm to 10 pm, and on Saturdays from 10 am to 1 pm. Everyone welcome.
13:15 Parade from Thor's Square to Víðistaðatún
The route will be from Thorsplan along Strandgata, through Bæjartorg, onto Vesturgata through Merkurtorg, Vesturtorg and Flókatorg, Flókagata and turning into Hraunbrún and up Garðaveg, finishing at Víðistaðatún to the sound of the bugle of the Hafnarfjörður Music School's Band.
13:30-16:00 Family programme at Víðistaðatún, organised by the Hraunbúar Scout Association.
A fun and varied Scout programme for the whole family at Víðistaðatún and the Scout centre Hraunbyrgi. There will be a coffee shop in Hraunbyrgi and a marquee at Víðistaðatún selling candy floss, popcorn and more.
