The first day of summer in Hafnarfjörður
A happy summer to dear residents of Hafnarfjörður and friends of Hafnarfjörður. The health capital, Hafnarfjörður, celebrates the arrival of summer with a summer festival in Hafnarfjörður. The festivities begin at 12 noon with a cross-country run in the heart of Hafnarfjörður. At 1:15 p.m. there will be a parade from Thor's Square to Víðistaðatún, where a family programme hosted by the Hraunbúar Scout Association will run until 4 p.m.

The health capital of Hafnarfjörður celebrates the arrival of summer with a summer festival in Hafnarfjörður. The festivities begin at 12 noon with a cross-country run in the heart of Hafnarfjörður and conclude with BMX BRÓS on the tennis court at Víðistaðatún at 4 pm, where a bicycle show full of joy and humour will be on offer. The whole family should be able to find something to suit them on the first day of summer in Hafnarfjörður, with a parade, concerts, open houses and a varied family programme in Víðistaðatún, organised by the Hraunbúar Scout Association. The town authorities and staff of the City of Hafnarfjörður wish the residents and friends of Hafnarfjörður a happy summer!
Programme for the First of May in Hafnarfjörður
- 12 noon: Hafnarfjörður Cross-Country Race in the town centre of Hafnarfjörður. The warm-up will begin at Thorsplan at 12 noon. The run will follow Strandgata and will be divided into age groups after the warm-up. There is no entry fee for the run and registration is on the door. Category winners will receive trophies and all competitors will receive medals, kindly provided by the City of Hafnarfjörður. After the race, the FH athletics department will be promoting athletics on Thorsplani, where you can try long jump and shot put. Strandgata will be closed to car traffic during the run and until the parade sets off from Víðistaðatún at 13:15.
- 13:00-16:00 Open house at the Þyt Sailing Club, Strandgata 88. Beginners and experienced sailors are invited to sail kayaks (for ages 9 and over) or rowing boats, and those with experience can sail dinghies, weather permitting. Throughout the summer, the Þyt Sailing Club will be holding open houses on Thursdays from 5 pm to 10 pm and Saturdays from 10 am to 1 pm. Everyone is welcome.
- 13:15 Parade from Thor's Square to Víðistaðatún. The route will be from Thorsplan along Strandgata, through Bæjartorg, onto Vesturgata through Merkurtorg, Vesturtorg and Flókatorg, Flókagata and turning into Hraunbrún and up Garðaveg, finishing at Víðistaðatún to the sound of the bugle of the Hafnarfjörður Music School's Band.
- 13:30-16 Family programme at Víðistaðatún, organised by the Hraunbúar Scout Association. A fun and varied Scout programme for the whole family at Víðistaðatún and the Scout centre Hraunbyrgi. Box climbing, a climbing wall, you can try toasting marshmallows and baking bread over a campfire, bouncy castles, boats and a giant hammock. A coffee shop in Hraunbyrgi and a marquee in Víðistaðatún where candy floss, crisps and popcorn will be on sale.
- 13:00 Sound Flood at Hafnarfjörður Library
It has become a tradition to sing in the summer at Hafnarfjörður Library, and this year it is Tónafljóð who are performing Icelandic pop gems.
There will be coffee on site, refreshments, and hopefully sunshine and summer vibes, and definitely joy and spring breezes at Hafnarfjörður Library with this fantastic choir in attendance! - At 14:00, BMX BRÓS on the tennis court at Víðistaðatún. BMX BRÓS take the programme at Víðistaðatún by storm with dangerous stunts and a bike show full of joy and humour.
