News

Fjarðar teams took the top four places in the annual Fjarðar Boccia Tournament, which took place at the weekend.  The mayors of Hafnarfjörður and Garðabær, and the board of ÍBH, were invited to take part, and the well-practised Fjarðarfélagar teams defeated the mayors' teams one after another.

Competitive spirit and joy at the Fjarðar Thorramót

Teams from Fjarðar took the top four places in the annual Fjarðar Thorramót boccia tournament. The tournament took place at Víðistaðaskóli over the weekend. Councillors from Hafnarfjörður and Garðabær, as well as the board of ÍBH, were invited to take part and, for the second year running, demonstrated that training makes all the difference to achieving success.

Valgerður Gaflari of the Year

A very pleasant moment occurred at the start of the games when Valgerður Hróðmarsdóttir, boccia coach and valedictorian, was named Gaflarinn 2026 by the Lions Club of Hafnarfjörður, and we congratulate her. Valgerður ran the tournament in style. The Kiwanis Club Sólborg provided refreshments during the tournament break, and the judges came from the Lions Club of Hafnarfjörður.

It has now been just over 20 years since Fjörður, a sports club for the disabled in Hafnarfjörður, has held the Thorramót. Participation has always been good, the fun great, and at the same time the club and the sport have received good and well-deserved publicity.

Valgerður Hróðmarsdóttir, Vala, boccia coach, was chosen as Gaflarinn 2026 by the Lions Club of Hafnarfjörður.

Charitable annual competition

„This brings our members a special joy. The Thorramót is a great celebration for the members,“ says Þröstur Erlingsson, chairman of the Fjarðar sports club.  „The “Já' tournament is one of the highlights of the year. It fosters friendships, and that's very important. We had some great representatives from Fjarðar there. One of them, Ragnar Björnsson, became the Icelandic champion in Boccia. He has become very accomplished and is very ambitious," he says.

„Then there's our Vala, who is the brains and the brawn of this. She is deservedly the Giver of the Year. She has been with the association since 1992 and has never taken a penny, being with us out of a sense of conviction. She has told us that the time is coming to an end, and it will be difficult to fill her shoes. A unique person.“

Exercise twice a week

The Fjarðar representatives have a good lead over the town councillors when it comes to boccia. They train twice a week. Members of Fjarðar also train in swimming up to seven times a week, as well as in athletics and weightlifting.

„It's extremely important for the group to have the company and the exercise. It does so much for them.“

Yes, this is fun – so refreshing that the fun is likely to be repeated in a year's time.
