A flourishing activity at the Chess Club

News

The Hafnarfjörður Skateboard Club has set up a model facility for kids of all ages interested in skateboarding, BMX and snowboarding, in the old fire station at Flatahraun.

Some time ago, the Chess Club and the Municipality of Hafnarfjörður entered into an agreement regarding the running and support of the club's activities, and today an agreement was signed that supports the continued operation of the club.

The facilities are among the best in the capital region.

The City of Hafnarfjörður and the Skateboard Club have been working on an indoor development at the old fire station, which has mainly involved building skateboard ramps, and this work will be completed by the New Year. To ensure the continued operation of the Skateboard Club, an agreement was made for the town to support the club. The agreement ensures that various quality standards are upheld and maintains the flourishing work that has characterised the club. The facility is considered one of the best in the capital region, and the club now has three sections: skateboarding, BMX and snowboarding. The snowboarding section is newly established and is already oversubscribed.

„I would like to take this opportunity to praise the Bretttafélagið and, by extension, all the parents who, through their voluntary work and can-do spirit, have created a facility for our children here in Hafnarfjörður that is a great example to others. It is important for any community to have a group of parents who see opportunities for action and seize them. Individual initiative is seldom quantified in monetary terms.“says Haraldur L. Haraldsson, the mayor, after the signing.

At the beginning of the month, the Boarding Club was accepted as an affiliated club of ÍBH and has therefore become a recognised sports club and an affiliated member of the ÍSÍ sports family. This is a major step for the Snowboard Club and its snowboard section, and means that all of the club's snowboard athletes can now take part in sporting events organised by the ISI's national sports federations and all competitions run by the Icelandic Ski Association, including the Andrés Andarleikar.
