Five-year partnership agreement for the Viking Festival
The City of Hafnarfjörður and the Viking association Rimmugýgur in Hafnarfjörður have entered into a new partnership agreement, ensuring the continued running of the Viking Festival in Hafnarfjörður for the next five years, from 2026 to 2030.
„The Viking Festival is one of the events that gives Hafnarfjörður its special character and strengthens both the cultural life and community spirit of the town. With this agreement, we are supporting a strong grassroots movement and ensuring that residents and visitors can continue to enjoy this unique experience for years to come,“ says Valdimar Víðisson, Mayor of Hafnarfjörður.
A vibrant and unique community of Vikings of all ages.
Rimmugýgur is a dynamic and vibrant society that has built a unique community around Viking culture, where passion, education, and the living interpretation of history come together. The agreement lays a solid foundation for the continued development of the Viking Festival, which is held annually in Víðistaðatún in June and has established itself as one of the more colourful and family-friendly events of the summer in Hafnarfjörður.
The aim of the collaboration is to enhance the town's cultural and tourist activities by building upon its rich cultural heritage. The festival is open to all and focuses on creating an accessible and vibrant experience for residents and visitors, where history and culture can be enjoyed in a creative and fun environment.
„It is a great and sincere encouragement for us at Rimmugýgi to experience the solid support from our beautiful town. The Viking Festival is so much more than just an event – it is an annual celebration, a family reunion and joyous gatherings, forged and strengthened together into a magnificent moment where everyone is welcome. Cooperation, community, the sharing of a narrative heritage and living history have characterised this festival from the very beginning, and we look forward to developing it further in close collaboration with the town and the festival's visitors,“ says Jökull Tandri, jarl of Rimmugýgjar.
A festival where history, creativity and togetherness can flourish.
According to the agreement, the City of Hafnarfjörður will provide an annual grant to the project to support the preparation, organisation and running of the festival. In return, Rimmugýgur commits to holding the festival annually, ensuring professional execution and safety, and working in close consultation with the town on its future development. The collaboration reflects the town's clear commitment to supporting grassroots initiatives, culture, and a vibrant community life in Hafnarfjörður – a place where history, creativity, and togetherness can flourish.
